World War II was a global conflict lasting from 1939 to 1945. The conflict was between the Allies (France, Poland, United States, United Kingdom, the Soviet Union (Russia) and China along with a couple other small European countries), and the Axis (Germany, Italy and Japan). The war began in September of 1939 with the Invasion of Poland and the declaration of war on Germany by France and the British Commonwealth. The United States joined in on the war after the Pearl Harbor attacks in 1941. After many battles and conflicts the war ended in April-May of 1945. Because of the Holocaust and the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare, it turned out to be the deadliest conflict in human history with over 70 million fatalities.
